Mental Health and
Supported Decision-Making

Overview:

The Mental health and Supported Decision-Making website is a key outcome of the ARC Linkage Project Options for Supported Decision-Making to Enhance the Recovery of People with Severe Mental Health Problems (the Supported Decision-Making project), along with the companion website Mental health: Carers' experiences.

Innovative and interdisciplinary, the Supported Decision-Making project aims to build a comprehensive understanding of the lived experience of psychiatric diagnoses, including bipolar disorder, psychosis, schizophrenia and depression. The research investigated experiences of people with these diagnoses, family carers, and mental health/allied health practitioners (including psychiatrists).

Narrative interviews were conducted with people from these three groups, and had a particular focus on exploring experiences of access by people with lived experience of psychiatric diagnoses to support in relation to making decisions about care and treatment. The Supported Decision-Making project addresses therapeutic management, the broader social and cultural significance of diagnosis, and the implications for mental health services of the 2014 Victorian Mental Health Act and its emphasis on supported decision making and a recovery framework.

Research findings informed the design of two unique online resources - one exploring the experiences of people with lived experience of psychiatric diagnoses, and the second detailing carers' experiences. Other resources have also been developed that will assist people diagnosed with bipolar disorder, psychosis, schizophrenia and depression in making informed decisions about their healthcare and other important life decisions and those supporting them (see News). Links to these resources will be available soon.

(For further background on the research, please visit the Supported Decision Making project website.)
