Jemma: Jemma, aged 59, was diagnosed with asthma at age 7 after having her tonsils out. As a teenager she competed in various sports and it was frustrating because there wasn’t a clear guideline as to what medications were OK to use in sport. She is allergic enough that it affects her quality of life, but not enough to go on biologicals… this made her feel angry. Athough she has 2 university degrees she had to retire from work, partially due to multiple admissions to hospital. She feels that in hospital you give your power away, often to nurses and doctors who have limited knowledge of treating asthma patients.
